Alcohol Interlock Overview

An alcohol interlock, also known as an ignition interlock,  is an in-car breath alcohol screening instrument that prevents a vehicle from starting if it detects a driver’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over a pre-set limit. Using the same alcohol sensing technology used by police in roadside screening, the ignition interlock is designed to fit inside the vehicle, near the driver’s seat, and is connected directly to the vehicle’s ignition system.

How Interlocks Work

Before starting the vehicle, the driver must blow into the interlock before the vehicle can be started. Once the interlock has determined the driver is below a preset BAC, the vehicle may be started. To prevent other people from providing the required breath sample, the interlock requires additional breath samples at random intervals during the trip.

Fees

Drivers subject to an ignition interlock condition are responsible for all installation and maintenance costs. When you call, a representative will provide details such as the installation and maintenance fees, as well as service center locations. The ignition interlock representative will also help answer questions related to reinstatement of your license.
